Description

The learning resources in this Toolbox are based on eight entry level competencies for the General Construction Training Package.

Seven of the eight current competencies provide a basic introduction to the specific trade. The eighth competency relates to workplace communication and is relevant to all trades.

The Toolbox uses a task-based approach to developing skills in preparing for work across several building and construction contexts. Each stated competency has several jobs. For each of these a scenario is presented and users complete each job by examining the context, engaging with the resources, and completing activities. The end result is a checklist that needs to be filled in and can be printed out. Though called a checklist, many of the questions are open ended in nature. The jobs on the whole are authentic and can be applied to either the scenario presented or the learner’s own context.

The materials are organized in two levels. The first executive level allows users to access the main screen, chat or discussion, resources, and library. At the second job level, elements of resources, the library and so on are presented in a more contextual level.

Engaging with all of these materials is necessary to complete the job checklist. Although the organization is hierarchical and modular; there is no sense of a requirement for one job to be completed in order for the next one to be attempted, though resources to support the jobs are presented in a more sequential manner.
