Fitting travel gear

This activity will help you test your knowledge of fitting travel gear.

.
Rug

How does the strapper check the rug is the right size for the horse?

  1. She checks it will cover the crest, dock and the front sits below the point of shoulder.
  2. She checks it will cover the arm, thigh and the front sits in the centre of the chest.
  3. She checks it will cover the withers, point of buttock and the front sits above the point of shoulder.

The front of the rug should sit above the point of shoulder and in front of the withers so it does not rub. It should be long enough to cover the point of buttock but not so long that it drags over the hips and tail.

Leg straps

How tight should the leg straps be on the rug?

  1. The straps should reach the top of the hocks.
  2. The straps should be as wide as her hand.
  3. The straps should be tight against the horse's buttocks.

There has to be some looseness in the straps so the horse can move, lay down and get up. If they are too loose they can get caught around the hocks or the rug will slide to one side.

Float boot

Which float boot goes on which side?

  1. The tabs should face the horse's tail and be on the outside of the leg.
  2. The tabs should face the horse's head and be on the outside of the leg.
  3. The tabs should face the horse’s tail and be on the inside of the leg.

The tabs should face towards the tail and be on the outside of the leg so they are less likely to be brushed open. It is also easier for the strapper to adjust them.

Float boots

What part of the leg does the front float boot cover?

  1. All of the leg from the knee down.
  2. All of the leg from below the knee to the hoof.
  3. All of the leg from the pastern down.

The knee has to be free so that the horse can bend its leg. If you need to protect the knee it is better to add separate knee boots.

Float boots

What part of the leg does the back boot cover?

  1. All of the leg from below the hock to the hoof.
  2. All of the leg including the hock.
  3. All of the leg including the gaskin.

If the gaskin and or hock were included in the boot it would be very hard for the horse to walk. If you have a horse that kicks in the trailer or truck you can use special hock boots to protect the horse.

Tail guard

What precautions does the strapper take when fitting the tail guard?

  1. She makes sure all of the tail hair is put inside the guard.
  2. She makes sure she gets the guard as tight as possible.
  3. She makes sure she gets the guard to cover as much of the tail as possible.

It is important to get all of the tail hair inside the guard so that it does not rub.
