The National Native Title Tribunal

The National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT) is an independent Commonwealth Government body established under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) to administer various processes in relation to native title.

The NNTT's roles and responsibilities include the following range of functions:

  • administration of native title determination applications, compensation applications and the registration test;
  • maintenance of the formal registers established under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth);
  • mediation of native title applications and compensation applications;
  • arbitration of future act matters;
  • research into legal, cultural and social issues relevant to native title;
  • assistance with Indigenous Land Use Agreements and their registration;
  • the geographic mapping of native title applications; and
  • information about native title.
