Native Title Representative Bodies
A Native Title Representative Body (NTRB) is an organisation approved
by the Commonwealth Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Affairs to represent the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders within a particular region. These bodies may be elected
local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land councils, legal
aid services or other such bodies.
They have special responsibility to assist and represent native
title holders and claimants to research, prepare or make their native
title determination applications or compensation applications.
They may also:
- help resolve disputes between Indigenous peoples;
- assist in negotiations over future acts; the provision of compensation,
working out agreements, or rights of access;
- certify applications for a determination of native title; and
- certify applications for the registration of ILUAs.
NTRBs are governed by an elected Council of Aboriginal or Torres
Strait Islander peoples from the region. They receive funds from
ATSIC to undertake their responsibilities relating to native title.
There are 18 NTRBs covering most parts of Australia.
