It is important to maintain a healthy relationship between the test team and production team. The production team will have already spent a large creative effort to produce the product to the test stage; you need to take care not to undermine their confidence and purpose. The testers and designers are complementary teams, not adversarial.
The way in which the tests are conducted and the manner in which the results are reported is critical to the production effort. The production team members need to feel included in the tests; tests should not be conducted secretly. Production team members need to be invited into the process, to see how the test is organised and managed. They will want to know that the test has been conducted professionally and that the experts are appropriate and the users represent the target audience.
The way in which the information from the test is fed back to the production team is important. The results need to be presented succinctly, honestly and clearly. The positive aspects need to be presented, as well as the negative. The production team will build on the positive aspects as a way of eliminating the negative aspects.
The test will need to show that you understood the purpose, goals, audience and technical parameters of the project. It's no good feeding back recommendations that can't be implemented because they take the project beyond the initial scope.
A full de-briefing, with test findings and conclusions will need to be arranged. This is best organised as a physical meeting, where explanations and clarifications can be provided face-to-face. Written lists of recommendations can seem abstract and confronting. The production team will want to be involved in developing design solutions that bring about improved product useability. |
Work with your Buddy to draft a letter to a multimedia production team informing them that you have been appointed to conduct an evaluation of their product.
Explain how you intend to to this (choose any technique) and what you will require from them. Use appropriate language you to communicate an evaluation. This is a joint exercise with your Buddy. |
