Introduction

Operators in the petro-chemical industry are increasingly required to undertake their skills and knowledge training on-the-job in small grabs of time between work duties. The industry makes extensive use of computer technology, intranet and internet.

The on-line Toolbox provides a flexible training environment that allows learners to conveniently access the training from any of their work stations within a single plant, multiple plant sites or wherever their work takes them. Toolbox does not stand alone but rather is an essential adjunct to the learning that must be undertaken face to face. The active participation of the tutor and/or assessor/workplace trainer in the learning environment is essential for this industry. Toolbox provides generic underpinning knowledge and a mechanism to facilitate the application to the enterprise through practical experience, face to face demonstration, practice and assessment.
