Emerging innovative practices

Government supporting innovation

The 2006 Business Council of Australia’s report New Concepts in Innovation looks at workplace practices that foster innovation.

The report shows emerging innovative practices in Australian organisations, making the important point that innovation can best be presented as activities that can be found in every aspect of business activities.

The report found:

  1. Innovation requires connectivity within and beyond all parts of an enterprise - it is not confined to research work.
  2. The imperative to deliver customer value drives the need for, and nature of, innovation.
  3. Innovation, in some circumstances, has more to do with managing human capital than with technology and invention.

One important recommendation is to make innovation present and part of every activity to be found in all areas of business and at all organisational levels.

Go to the Business Council of Australia website and search for "concepts innovation". Select the New Concepts in Innovation report and read one of the 18 case studies provided.

  1. Summarise the innovative changes made within that business.
  2. How has the company benefited from introducing a new innovative idea or strategy?

Write up your report and keep a copy for your records.
