Assess safety risks – Going solo

Do the following activities to develop your knowledge and skills to assess safety risks. Work through the activities in the suggested order, or go straight to the activity you need to do.

Activity one

Review OHS legislation

Before you can manage safety risks for events you need to be familiar with occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation. Review OHS legislation in your state/territory and check you understand your responsibilities as an Event Manager.

Activity two

Research the risk management process

OHS risk management involves developing and implementing strategies and tools to manage workplace risk. Get a detailed overview of the risk management process and the critical role in this process of consultation with a range of stakeholders.

Activity three

Identify hazards at an event

The risk management process starts by identifying hazards. Find out what the common hazards are for events, and then investigate the potential hazards for one event. Report on the hazards using standard industry reporting tools.

Activity four

Assess safety risks

The next step in the risk management process is to assess and prioritise the safety risks which each hazard presents. Practise this step by assessing hazards at an outdoor event and using a risk assessment matrix.

Activity five

Control risk

After you have identified and prioritised the risks associated with event hazards, you must put in place measures to control risks. These measures will either eliminate or reduce the likelihood of risks occurring. A standard tool is the 'hierarchy of control' which will help you to determine suitable control measures.

Activity six

Review the process

Reviewing the risk management process is an ongoing course of action. Practise an event safety review and use tools and methods to identify improvements to risk management.
