Assess safety risks - Network

The following activities are a way to gain knowledge and skills by collaborating with others in your learning group. Select the name of the activity to get the brief for your group work.

Activity one

OHS collaborative research

OHS authorities develop guidelines to assist with implementing legislative requirements. You’ll need to be able to access the current guidelines as well as other useful websites to get help with planning for safe events. Share useful OHS websites found by people in your group and harness the collective power of internet searching and tagging.

Activity two

Collaborate and plan to ensure OHS compliance

As a group plan all the consultations you will need to make prior to an event so that your event will comply with legislation, and to ensure your event partners are complying with their OHS responsibilities.

Activity three

Analyse event activities for hazards and risks

Break out in small teams to analyse event activities and potential hazards during an event. Compile a group Hazard identification register, and use the experience and expertise amongst the group to ensure the hazard identification is thorough and that all the risks are identified.

Activity four

Discuss duty of care responsibilities

Your safety responsibilities extend to a duty of care for all your event participants. What does 'duty of care' mean when planning for a safe event? Determining what will be a reasonable standard of care and the precautions which need to be taken is best done through consultation and team work.

Activity five

Develop a risk control resource

To identify control measures which will reduce or eliminate safety risks you may need to think outside the square and collaborate with co-workers or safety experts to find the best solutions. Document examples of control measures used for event safety and conduct a peer review to check the controls and suggest alternatives.

Activity five

Collaboratively review OHS processes

One way to review how well risks were managed throughout an event is to conduct a staff debrief after the event. Debrief an event by discussing incident reports arising from the event and agree on improvements needed for the next event.
